What is the significance/importance of finding the order of a reaction? What does it tell us?

Finding the order of a reaction has many applications, including being able to identity the differential and integrated rate laws from the order. Know rate laws allows us to calculate a variety of values such as k and the concentration of a species. Hope that helps!

Knowing the order of a reaction will also help in either identifying or creating the appropriate graph for the reaction. So far, in class, we've gone through first order reactions, but we'll be covering zero order reactions and second order reactions in lecture this week. Though third and fourth order reactions exist, we don't cover them because as the order rises, the probability of occurrence drops.

The order is generally the sum of the exponents of each concentration contributing to the rate law. This information not only helps you calculate the rate law, it gives you a clearer understanding about the mixture and which concentrations effect the rate of the reaction the most.
