## Rate Laws

$aR \to bP, Rate = -\frac{1}{a} \frac{d[R]}{dt} = \frac{1}{b}\frac{d[P]}{dt}$

### Rate Laws

Is it necessary for us to understand/know the ways how to derive the formulas? He showed us all the derivations in class, but I'm unsure if he would expect us to on a test.

The rate laws for the different orders and their half lives are on the constants and equations sheet

I think he shows us the derivation to establish some kind of fundamentals, but it really just confuses the [censored] out of me. I don't think we would ever be asked to derive them on a test, just to apply them to problems similar to homework and tests.

the formulas should be on the sheet we get on the exam, he shows us the derivation to understand where it comes from.

### Re: Rate Laws

I have asked some of the TA's and UA's this question and they said he has begun to stray away from asking for a straight up derivation but I would not totally cancel it out as a possible conceptual problem for the final. Honestly its not too hard to memorize the steps as there is a pattern you can follow for all orders. It also helps that he gives the derived equation on the constants sheet so you can check your answer and derivation.

### Re: Rate Laws

One Ta said that we should be familiar with the derivation but it would be very unlikely for it to be asked on the exam

### Re: Rate Laws

My TA has brought it up in our discussion section and he told us to be familiar with the derivation, but it is unlikely that he will ask on an exam but I still think we should know it as he spent some time in class talking about the derivations. Llavelle did mention why he did that in lecture and it is to give us a more basic fundamental understanding of where the equations we use come from.

### Re: Rate Laws

I think you should have a general understanding of the derivation, but you shouldn't stress yourself out over studying that, as the formulas will be on the formula sheet.

### Re: Rate Laws

I would recommend knowing how he derived in case there are conceptual questions about it. I would also be familiar with the graphs, such as which order has a linear graph, etc.
