### determining the rate of reaction for individual components in the reaction

When asking about the reaction rate of a reactant, should the value be positive or negative?
I know that for products, more are forming, so the reaction rate for the individual product is positive.

It'll be negative because in order to form products you have to lost matter from the reactants
