Slowest step

Postby Briana Yik 1H » Thu Mar 14, 2019 4:35 pm

Why do we use the rate of the slowest step for the overall rate law of an equation?

Similar to when the amount of product produced was based on the limiting reactant, the rate of a reaction is dependent on the slowest step. It doesn't matter how much you change the faster reaction, the slower reaction is still going to be in control because you want to take into account the entire process when finding the rate. It can't be faster than the slowest step (or slower), so that is the step that controls the reaction rate. Hope that helps a bit!
