is the only way to determine rate law by experiment?

Also if given a chemical equation, does the coefficient in front of the reactant automatically translate into the exponent in the rate law?

The exponent is the order of the reaction and is not related to the coefficient.

The coefficient does not automatically translate into the exponent in the rate law. The exponent in the rate law is the order of the reaction which is found using experimental data that would be given.

The coefficient does not automatically translate to the exponent in the rate law. As for how to determine the rate law, it is always based on experimental data
