Enzyme saturation

Postby Abigail Menchaca_1H » Sun Mar 08, 2020 11:33 pm

What does the saturation of an enzyme contribute to the rate of reaction?

If an enzyme is saturated, then the reaction rate is not going to increase even if the concentration of reactant increases.

When enzyme is saturated, the increase in reaction rate levels off.

Once the enzyme becomes saturated, it is working at its optimal performance, so the reaction rate levels off.

Saturation of an enzyme meas that all of the active sites of the enzymes have been occupied, so once this limit is reached, there can be further increase of reaction rate, it has reached its peak.

If an enzyme is saturated, the rate will not change no matter how much substrate is added since the enzyme is already fully reacting and being used.

Once an enzyme becomes saturated, then the reaction is using the enzyme to its best ability (for the amount of reactants, there are enough molecules of enzyme to have the effect on all of it), and so adding more enzyme will not increase the reaction rate .
