Elementary reactions

How are we able to tell whether or not something is an elementary reaction? Also how is writing the rate law of an elementary reaction different from a non-elementary reaction?

If the rate of the reaction is proportional to the concentration of the reactants then it is an elementary reaction

I think you're confusing an elementary reaction for some kind of a different reaction. An elementary reaction is just the term we use for the smaller steps that when added together, result in the complete reaction. So if a reaction is ever broken down into several steps, each of those steps is an elementary reaction.

Writing the rate law for an elementary reaction is the same as writing the rate law for the complete reaction.

As said earlier, an elementary reaction is simply breaking down the reaction into a series of intermediate reaction steps which can be combined in order to write the rate law. The benefit of writing out elementary reactions is that the reaction that occurs in the slow step is the rate-determining step for the reaction.

Elementary reactions show the progress of a reaction so it is broken down into many steps to show this. For an elementary reaction the reaction rate is directly proportional to the concentration fo the reactant.
