Rate constant (k)

Postby Ju-Wei Wang 1I » Sat Feb 24, 2018 2:58 pm

Why is the rate constant called the rate constant even though the value varies since it depends on temperature and activation energy?

Varying reactions will have varying reaction constants, but within a reaction, k remains constant so that's why they give it the name.

The K of a reaction is always the same, but Q is different depending on how close the reaction is to completion.

The rate constant K, is constant for a particular reaction at a particular temperature

So yes, you're right; it may change with a temperature change, but usually these rate constants are measured by scientists in a lab setting, where temperature remains controlled. K is a very idealized constant because of the many other factors that may come into play that can affect the reaction rate in real life.

K is constant for each different reaction since they each have different molecules reacting at different temperatures and thus would require a different constant value to carry out the reaction. However K is the same for each individual reaction.
