Units for rate

Postby JennyCKim1J » Thu Mar 08, 2018 10:44 am

For rate, is it okay to leave the answer as mmol or do I have to convert to mol? Does rate unit always have to be M*L-1*s-1?

Generally, unless otherwise specified, it's best to make your final answer units in moles. If you do the conversion it at the beginning, though, then it eliminates any possibility for unit mistakes later (ie what happens you're dealing with mmol and M).

Rate is always M/s or mol/Ls. Concentration is always M or mol/L. Rate constant, k, has varying units depending on the order of the reaction because it changes to ensure concentration and rate units never change (k equalizes the units).

I doubt it matters. As long as the answer makes sense it would probably be accepted as an answer (though moles is used a lot more). Rate units will usually stay the same aside from small changes like converting between stuff like seconds to minutes.

As long as you keep the units the same throughout the problem, you should get the same answer. Just make sure to use the constants that give you the same units.

It is okay to leave your answer in mmol as long as the question doesn't ask for the answer in mol
