rate law

Just a clarification, is the only way to determine rate law by experiment?

Yes, this is because we need to know how a change in concentration of one of the reactants will change the rate of the reaction. It is impossible to know the order of each reactant for every reaction without conducting experiments.

We can come up with a proposed rate law, but it may not always be correct without experiments to verify it.

Yes! Rate laws can ONLY be determined by experiment because it is impossible to know the order of a reaction or reactant simply by looking at the chemical equation. We can come up with proposed rate laws based on how we think things will react, but we need experiments to prove that these proposed rate laws are possible.

What would a proposed rate law look like versus a verified one? Is the experiment just for the order or does the rate constant come from there too?

After concentrations, rates, and orders are calculated from experimental data, k is calculated using the equation rate =k [R]^n

You would also be able to tell the order of the reactin by looking at the rate constant, assuming its given. For instance
1/s would be first order.
