Gas phase products

Postby ian_haliburton_1f » Fri Mar 01, 2019 2:20 pm

When there is a gas phase product in an open system reaction, is it safe to ignore the reverse reaction because the gas produced escapes and therefore does not react with the other products?

no, but it is safe to assume that the reverse reaction is very unlikely to occur.

Why is the reverse reaction very unlikely to occur?

The gas product will leave the solution (not all of it however, this is why the reverse reaction can still occur), and thus there is less product to react to form reactants
