I think that you'll be okay memorizing it and applying it in problems. That being said, it's always better to understand equations in terms of their derivation, so knowing how to derive the equation certainly would help you. You'll be able to understand conceptual equations better. Hope this helped.
I think that since Dr. Lavelle went over the derivations in class it is important to understand the concept but they should all be on the equation sheet so I wouldn't worry about memorizing! It is more important to understand the differences and know which equation to use for different ordered reactions.
