reactant vs product

Postby Alison Trinh 1E » Sun Mar 01, 2020 9:34 pm

Why do we focus on [R] when finding initial rates rather than [P] ?

We focus more on [R] than [P] because it is easier to observe the initial rates of the reaction when t is very close to t=0. There are more reactants present than products at the beginning of the reaction so it is easier to measure the initial reaction rate if we examine [R].

Initially at t=0 (before the reaction even starts) there aren't any products at all, therefore initial reaction rates only depend on reactant concentration.

^^what they said, and I also think Lavelle mentioned that the rate of products formed is the same as the rate for reactants but with the opposite sign. Can someone confirm that I am remembering correctly?

Will we ever use [P]? If so when?
