Rate Laws

Can you determine the order of the rate laws solely upon inspection?

No, I believe you have to calculate it based off of the rate law equation, or through the method of initial rates.

I also believe it'd always require some work/calculation

Rate laws for a reaction are determined experimentally and cannot be inferred from sole inspection of a chemical equation. However, for elementary reactions, you can use the number of reactant molecules to determine the rate law. For instance, a unimolecular reaction would have a first-order rate law while a bimolecular reaction would have a second-oder reaction.
