How do you determine which step is slow and which is (or are) fast?

This information should be given to you by the problem as there is no way to determine whether one reaction step is faster or slower than another. Just know that the slow step determines the rate law and if there is an intermediate in the slow step, treat the fast step above it as an equilibrium and use it to replace the intermediate so it is not in the rate law.

The problem will usually tell you if it is a fast or slow mechanism:) also hi hailey

You will most likely not need to determine which step is the slow step

the question will usually indicate which step is the fast step and which is the slow step as we have not learned a process for determining slow steps yet
