Slowest step

Why is the slowest step considered the rate determining state?

Re: Slowest step

Since the entire reaction, in order to come to a completion, has to wait for the slowest step to finish, the overall reaction rate is pretty much reliant on the rate of the slowest step. That's why the slowest step is called the rate-determining step.

Re: Slowest step

No matter how quickly the fastest reaction occurs, the full reaction is not complete until the slowest one is done. Therefore, the rate of the full reaction is determined by the slowest step.

Re: Slowest step

The overall rate is determined by the slowest step because the reaction is not completed until this step is finished, which is why it is considered rate determining

Re: Slowest step

The slow step determines the rate of the full reaction because no matter how fast the other steps are, the reaction is only complete once the slow step has been completed.

Re: Slowest step

The slowest step acts as a bottleneck so that, no matter how fast the rest of the reaction occurs, the overall reaction cannot be completed until the slowest step is done.

Re: Slowest step

Because the slowest step needs to be done for the reaction to be able to be completed.

Re: Slowest step

the overall reaction can't come to completion until the slowest step comes to completion, so this rate determines the overall rate

Re: Slowest step

The rate determining state is the slowest step in a reaction mechanism because it the overall reaction is only moves towards completion until the all steps of the reaction mechanism are completed and that is dependent on the slowest step as that step takes the longest to complete and will complete last.
