rate constant

What is the kr constant? The book just explains it as a proportion of the initial rate of consumption? I am having a hard time understanding this concept.

It seems to just be a difference in notation (at least, thats what I got from page 600). Take kr to be equal to k.

I believe they're trying to differentiate this k from the equilibrium constant K.

In this case, kr is the k we mean in the rate of reaction (rate = k[Reactant]^n)

kr is the reaction rate constant which relates the rate of the initial concentrations to the rate of the chemical reaction.
