## Calculus

$\frac{d[R]}{dt}=-k; [R]=-kt + [R]_{0}; t_{\frac{1}{2}}=\frac{[R]_{0}}{2k}$

### Calculus

To what extent are we going to need to know calculus?

### Re: Calculus

I don't think we will actually need to use calculus to solve the problems mathematically, so it's more of a conceptual thing like when it comes to understanding what the instantaneous rates mean and also how to derive the integrated rate laws from the differential rate laws. Dr. Lavelle sent an email outlining some of the calculus we use for conceptual understanding so that's a good review.

### Re: Calculus

Very basic if any. Just know basic derivatives and integration rules and it will help with understanding the formulas and ways to solve.

### Re: Calculus

I think in deriving the equations, we use some basic integration rules, but for specific ones like the integral of ln, the rule is usually given.

### Re: Calculus

I actually don't think we will need to know any calculus, as long as you memorize or understand how many of the equations are derived. In fact, I think almost of the equations are in the equation sheet, so you won't be expected to derive them on the test. (I think).

### Re: Calculus

All the equations on the sheet are given to us. Plus the exam is open book so I don’t think you need to know any calc for the final

### Re: Calculus

Probably just to derive/integrate the formulas.

### Re: Calculus

I don't think there will by any derivations on the exam, so not much/basic calculus might be needed.

### Re: Calculus

Lavelle has a section on his website dedicated to the calculus we will need to know along with math help.

You'll need especially when determing equilibrium constants. Whether it be understanding logs and antilogs, or determining the value of x from an ice table.

### Re: Calculus

Just basic knowledge of calculus for this final, but calculus in general is helpful to understand the derivation of each of the formulas from one another.
