Determining Order of Reactions

Postby Anya Holbrook 1E » Sun Mar 07, 2021 6:32 pm

Is there any way for us to look an a chemical reaction and be able to tell what order it is, or would we have to go through the calculations before we can tell?

I'm pretty sure that you can't tell from just the reaction, you'd need data on changes in concentration and rate to find the order. Hope this helps!

You need the concentration and rate changes to find the orders!

I think it was said in lecture that there's no way to immediately tell what order of reaction is just from looking at it and that you'd need the rate constant and the concentrations.

I don't think you can determine it by just looking at the reaction, so you would have to do the calculations looking at the rates and concentrations.

You will need to have data on different rates and concentrations. I don't think it's possible to figure out by just looking at the reaction.

You have to do the calculations using rates for many experiments. Alternatively, you may also be given an integrated rate law and you can match it the appropriate order.

Concentrations and rate changes are needed to find the order.

Hi! There's no way to tell without reaction data because the order depends on the rate of change in concentrations of the reactants/products. Hope that helps!

To find the orders, you need the concentration and rate changes. You can also do this through the reaction mechanism; the slow step of the reaction can give you the rate law, which then can lead you to the order of the reaction.
