when a first order reaction works do we use that rate to calculate K?

Once you calculate all the orders of the reactants, you would use this along with the rate of the reaction and initial concentrations of those reactants in order to calculate your rate constant, k. :)

you may also be given the half-life and asked to calculate k from that, but just use the equation sheet and see what variables are given.
