Are we ever going to be asked to replicate the derivation of an equation on an exam? Some of the derivations in this section were confusing, and if I can just memorize the equation I need and get full points, it would be really helpful for me.
Although unlikely that something like that would appear on an exam, it is in fact a learning objective that you do know how to derive the integrated rate law equations and the half life equations. If you do need help with the math part of it, as you know there are math assistance resources on Prof. Lavelle's website. The specific method we use to derive the integrated rate laws is solving a basic differential equation with integration, and we use algebra to derive the half life equations (set [A] = 0.5[Ao] and solve for "t").
I don't think that we will be asked to know how to derive the different equations given in this unit, but it is important and helpful to see the steps that it takes to get to a specific equation.
I wouldnt be surprised to see a derivation on the exam. Some of the UAs had a derivation problem on their second test last year. Also lavelle specifically went through the derivations in class, so we should probably know how to do it.
The derivations for integrated rate law will be useful to know, as well as the equations to find the rate constant or activation energy at different temperatures. We can just look in our notes for the last two lectures for the important derivations.
Definitely understand how to derive the equations as it aids in understanding their function and just to visualize how the different components interact with each other. This can aid with conceptual questions as well as solving questions.
