Remembering Half Life Formulas

Postby Anna Lockhart 2B » Sun Mar 14, 2021 10:22 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions for remembering the different half-life formulas for different order reactions?

I don't think this is needed because we will always be given formulas.

Not really. There's a few different equations that involve half-life, so it'd be difficult to remember them all. I guess just hope that the professors will give them to you when needed.

If needed, the half life equations are pretty easy to derive just using [A] = 1/2 * [A]0 and plugging this into the linear equation for a given order of a reaction. For example, plugging in 1/2[A]0 in to the first order equation ln([A]) = -kt + ln([A]0) gives us t (1/2) = 0.693 / k .
