Reaction Order Speed

Postby Kelli Chong [1B] » Sun Mar 17, 2024 11:50 pm

Are second order reactions faster than first/zero order reactions?

Hi!
A reaction being first order does not necessarily indicate that it is faster than a second order reaction, just that changing the concentrations of a reactant in the first order reaction has a less "drastic" effect on the rate than if you made that same concentration change to a second order reaction.
Hope this helps!

Yes!...but it depends. Second order reactions can be faster/slower than first/zero order reactions depending on the reaction kinetics and the conditions. Usually second order reactions involve the simultaneous collision of 2 reactant molecules and move faster than first order reactions (have collision of single reactant molecule). The rate of a reaction is influenced by many factors.

In general, it's not accurate to say that second-order reactions are always faster than first or zero-order reactions. The rate of a reaction depends on various factors, including the reaction mechanism, the concentrations of reactants, and the presence of catalysts. Zero-order reactions have a constant rate independent of reactant concentration, while first-order reactions' rates depend on reactant concentration. Second-order reactions' rates depend on reactant concentration squared or the product of two reactant concentrations. Whether a second-order reaction is faster than first or zero-order reactions depends on specific reaction kinetics and conditions
