reaction intermediate

Postby Samantha Jimenez 4k » Fri Mar 15, 2019 2:26 am

For one of the homework problems, it gives the elementary steps and asks what the reaction intermediate is, what exactly would this be?

This would be the molecule that you cancel out when combining step 1 and step two because an intermediate is formed.

Intermediates are the things that are produced in one step but used up in a later step. They do not appear in the overall chemical equation. These are the ones that are canceled out when you add the steps together and they are not reactants present in beginning.

The intermediate is the molecule formed in step 1 that is then used in step 2.

A reaction intermediate is a molecule that is formed by the reaction, usually in step 1, and is used up by a later step of the reaction. It does not appear in the original reactants or final products.
