Determining Order Reactions

Postby YuditGaribay3J » Sun Mar 14, 2021 3:55 am

How do you guys determine which experiments are the best to use to determine the order reactions? This is the one that always confused me and I end up confusing the order reactions.

If you're given a list of experiments which correspond to certain reactant concentrations, you pick which experiments to compare based on which reactant's concentration is being held constant. If there are two reactants and you're trying to determine the order of the first reactant, you would pick two experiments where the concentration of the second reactant stays constant and compare them. That way you know the rate is being affected by the change in concentration of only the reactant you are analyzing (the other reactant is not contributing to the change in the rate).

As stated above, you would need to use the trials which have a constant concentration for all the reactants except for one. You can set up the rate law equation so that the reactants with the same constant concentration can cancel out. To find the order of the reaction, you can add the individual orders.
