Reaction Order

Postby Michael Iter 2F » Tue Mar 16, 2021 4:29 am

Why is second order the highest that we study? Are higher orders possible? If not why not?

I believe there is also a third order

hello,

The most common reaction orders are zero, first, and second. There are higher orders such as 3rd and 4th, but we are studying the most common ones. There is also mixed order where the rate is fractional.

We are focusing on the concepts of kinetics; studying a much higher order would be much more complicated mathematics, and would not really help assess our understanding of the topic. I believe that for the purposes of this class, we only need to study up to second order, maybe third for a longer or more complicated reaction.
