### Einstein

When Einstein figured that particles make up electromagnetic radiation, did he name them photons or was that someone else?

### Re: Einstein

I think someone else named them! The book says that Einstein "proposed that electromagnetic radiation consists of particles, which were later called photons."

Hi
Einstein discovered the concept of the photon however Gilbert Lewis, an american chemist, named it photon.

On that note, does anyone know what Einstein called photons during his experimental process or did he just call them generic particles? And did he think they were a unique type of particle, or something that was already established?

### Re: Einstein

This quote sheds light onto how Einstein alluded to the idea of photons: "when a light ray is spreading from a point, the energy is not distributed continuously over ever-increasing spaces, but consists of a finite number of energy quanta that are localized in points in space, move without dividing, and can be absorbed or generated only as a whole" (Einstein 87, in The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein Volume 2). From this quote, I would assume that the term "energy quanta" is what he called photons.
