### week 3 discussion #8

I was hoping if anyone can clarify as to how I would go about answering this question.

#8. A mixture of argon and mercury vapor used in blue advertising signs emits light of wavelength 470nm. Calculate the energy change resulting from the emission of 1.00mol of photons at this wavelength.

So, you're trying to find the energy (E=hc/wavelength). So, first you would convert the wavelength from nm to m. Then plug that into E=hc/wavelenth. But now you want to find the energy that is emitted when there is 1 mol of photons. You know that the energy that you have just found is energy per photon, so you multiply it by avagadro's # to get the photon units to cancel and you are left with Joules.
I'm not sure if this is right, but I got 2.54*10^5 J.
