Symbol for frequency

What symbol for frequency should we use in homework assignments and exams? The letter f or the greek letter nu? Or perhaps it doesn't matter at all and the correcter will allow both? I know that we've only used nu so far, but I'm used to the letter f from high school.

Re: Symbol for frequency

Both are commonly used as symbols for frequency. Perhaps you could use whichever one is given to you in the problem but ultimately it should not matter.

Re: Symbol for frequency

The textbook also uses v to represent frequency, for example in the relation lambda (wavelength) * v ( frequency) = c (speed of light)

Re: Symbol for frequency

I imagine we should stick to v (nu) since that's what Lavelle has used in lectures and will likely look for on exams.

Re: Symbol for frequency

I would just stick with v because that's what Lavelle has been giving us.

Re: Symbol for frequency

I had the same question...in high school we used f for frequency and v (nu) for other stuff. But I suppose v (nu) for frequency is the best way to go now to avoid confusion.

Re: Symbol for frequency

Yes, that is the best way to avoid confusion because that is what the textbook has as the symbol for frequency (v Greek letter nu).

Re: Symbol for frequency

We should stick to v (nu) for the symbol representing frequency.

Re: Symbol for frequency

v is used in both lectures and the textbook, so it's probably the safest symbol to use.

Re: Symbol for frequency

Saw a chem mod reply to someone saying we use nu. It's basically just a cursive v.

Re: Symbol for frequency

Yes, I have not seen "f" used in many textbooks or academic sources; I would stick with "v" (nu).

Re: Symbol for frequency

I have not seen Dr. Lavelle introduce "f" yet so I would just stick with "v" (nu).

Re: Symbol for frequency

It's best to just stick with what the textbook and Dr. Lavelle has been using in class, "v" (nu).
