Units for E

Postby Labiba Sardar 2A » Sun Oct 13, 2019 11:21 am

Is the unit for E always implied as being J/atoms or J/photons?

Since this equation applies to light, it would be J/photon.

Yes, energy is measured in joules (E); for most problems, you'll answer with J/photon, but in problems asking for the energy per atom, you'll need to multiply by Avogadro's number and answer in J/atom.

Energy in the situations that discuss light is considered as J/photon. If the energy is provided in eV (electron Volts), you will have to convert it to J/photon. The conversion factor is about 1 eV = 1.6 *10^-19 J/photon.

The unit for E is always implied as being J / photons, but if you want to convert to J / atoms, you must use Avogadro's number.
