Symbol that looks like this: oC

Postby Lisa Ramos 1C » Thu Oct 21, 2021 4:25 pm

I'm not exactly sure how to illustrate the actual symbol of this, but it looks like "oc" but put together, or an almost finished side-ways 8. Does anyone know what that symbol is called, and also what it means? It's typically used in the context of energy and frequency, or frequency and wavelength.

This sign indicates proportionality. In most cases we have seen it so far, it has been used to represent the equations without constants. For example, E=hv is could be written as E ∝ v since h is just the constant of proportionality in this case

Like everyone above said, this symbol indicates proportionality, so whenever it is put between two variables, it indicates that the two parameters are proportional to each other. Hope this helps:)

Like the others have said, this symbol indicates proportionality. It usually shows a direct correlation between two variables.

If this is the symbol you are referring to, it is read as "is proportional to"

That symbol is used to show proportionality. For example, energy of a photon is proportional to frequency.

This denotes proportionality, and is typically used to show direct relationships between equations or something of that respect.
