What is a catalyst? How does it function?

### Re: Catalyst

A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy of a reaction. It does this by binding to the reactants and making it easier for the product to form (by bringing reactants together, orienting the reactants in the correct position to react, or providing the ideal environment for the reaction to occur). A lower activation energy increases the rate of a reaction because less energy is needed for the reaction to start, so it will proceed faster.
