### Intermediates and Catalysts in a reaction mechanism

How do you know if a molecule in a proposed reaction mechanism is an intermediate or a catalyst?

An intermediate first appears as a product and is then consumed as a reactant in the subsequent step. A catalyst first appears as a reactant and is then released as a product in the subsequent step. Both intermediates and catalysts do not appear in the overall rate law equation.

Example of an Intermediate of N202:
Step 1: NO + NO -->N2O2

Step 2: N2O2 --> NO + NO

Example of a Catalyst of Fe2+:

Step 1: H2O2 + Fe2+ → H2O + Fe3+

Step 2: H2O2 + Fe3+ + 2H+ → H2O + O2 + Fe2+ + 2H+
