Slow Step Rate Law

Postby Suzan Manoian 1H » Sun Mar 17, 2024 7:50 pm

While intermediates are not included in the overall rate law, can they be included in the rate law for the specific slow step?

Yes, the intermediate is included in the rate equation of a given elementary slow step. However, in the overall rate law expression, the intermediate is not included because it is both created and used up in the middle steps of the mechanism.

Yes, intermediates can be in the rate law of an intermediate step.

I believe that the point of the slow step is to determine the overall rate law since it is the rate-determining step, so you wouldn't use it in the sense that you are talking about, but techincally it will be apart of the individual rate law just make sure its not in the overall!
