Slow vs. Fast Step

Postby Gabriel Barcelona 2L » Sun Mar 17, 2024 10:38 pm

What is the difference between the slow rate-determining step and the fast step? How can you identify and differentiate between the two?

the slow step in a reaction mechanism is found by comparing the rates of the individual steps in the mechanism and it is the step with the highest activation energy therefore limits the overall rate of the reaction. Fast step isn’t as important for overall rate.

The slow step rate is the rate that has the highest activation energy. It is also the step in the reaction mechanism where introducing a catalyst would increase the overall rate of the chemical reaction!

The slow step would be the step with the highest activation energy while every other step would be a fast step.
