Homework Problem 15.45

Postby Ardo 2K » Sun Mar 04, 2018 5:39 pm

To write the overall reaction for the mechanism that is proposed in the given problem all we need to do is add the reactions together? Also how can we tell which step is the longest one?

Yes we add the two steps together to get
And you can see AB appears twice but is canceled in the two steps. So AB is the intermediate substance.
I think you can mark either one as the longest step for the rate determining step since the only restriction is the rate determining step should match the rate equation. If a rate equation is given, then you can easily determine the rate determining step. However, in this case, there is no rate equation given.
