Typically, if a proposed mechanism has multiple steps, if there is a product produced in step one and used as a reactant in a later step, then that product is an intermediate.

A compound is an intermediate if it is produced in one step of the reaction and is consumed as a reactant in a later step, but does not appear in the overall reaction. If it appears as one of the reactants at the beginning and later appears as a product in a subsequent step, the compound is instead a catalyst.
