Slow/Fast Step

Postby Jesse_torres2H » Thu Mar 15, 2018 4:42 pm

Is it possible to determine what step is the slow step and what step is passed if we are only given the rate law?

The elementary slow step will be the one that reflects the rate law. Sometimes this is given directly in the slow step in terms of concentrations of reactants. In other cases you may have to use the pre-equilibrium method to substitute out a concentration of an intermediate.

Yes, if we are given the rate law, we will be able to tell which step is the slow step, because the slow step is the limiting step that controls the rate of the reaction.
