Catalyst and Intermediate

Postby Melodie Oh 2A » Sat Mar 17, 2018 10:28 pm

How do you know the difference between a catalyst and in intermediate in a reaction mechanism??

A catalyst will be used up in a step in the reaction mechanism but gets produced again in a different step. An intermediate gets produced in a step of a mechanism but gets consumed in another. Also, a catalyst can be included in the overall rate law, while an intermediate cannot.

A catalyst is added to the reaction first appears as a reactant, and then as a product. An intermediate is created from a reaction, so it first appears as a product, and then as a reactant.

If you see the same molecule, first as a product and then used up in as a reactant, that's an intermediate.
If you see the same molecule first as a reactant and then rejuvenated as a product later on, that's a catalyst.

If a molecule is produced and consumed in the next step, it's an intermediate.
If a molecule appears on the reactant side and the product side, it's a catalyst.

catalysts are usually in the reactants of the first step and the products of the second step. Intermediates is the other way around

A catalyst and intermediate are both species that are consumed in the reaction, but a catalyst is present in the beginning of the reaction and an intermediate is formed at the end of a step.

a catalyst appears first as a reactant?
