steady state vs pre equilibrium

Postby juchung7 » Sun Mar 18, 2018 10:07 am

How would you know when to use either approach to solving for rate law? Are there any factors that would make you assume one over the other?

Pre equilibrium indicates a fast step before a slow step and the need to substitute the intermediate in the slow step with the equilibrium constant equation we find from the fast step.

Pre equilibrium is easy to use but is not as flexible at steady state approximations which is usually used for complex mechanisms.

what makes steady state more flexible in contrast to pre equilibrium?
