rate of disappearance

How do we calculate a rate law if we are given the rate of disappearance instead of the rate of formation?

It would be in terms of the compound that is being consumed. For example,

A —> B + C
R = k[A]

Because we will be studying rate constants bases on reactants, the rates of disappearance of reactants are likely what we'll be basing our rate laws on for the final

We have to consider the rate of disappearance for the reactants so I think I would use the mol-to-mol ratio to calculate how much reactant disappeared.
