Catalysts in Rate Law

Postby Jacob Bershatski 4C » Thu Mar 14, 2019 11:03 pm

For a given reaction mechanism, can catalysts be included in the rate law?

Catalysts can be included in the rate law, just intermediates cannot.

Yes! I'm pretty sure, because it would be hard to cancel them out due to intermdiates.

for eg, take
A+catalyst-->B (fast)
B-->C + catalyst (slow)

you could cancel out for B, but then your expression would be in terms of the catalyst

I asked my TA today, he said catalysts can be included in elementary step rate laws, but not the overall?

So does an increased concentration of an aqueous catalyst increase the rate of the reaction?
