Slow step

Postby Kate Swertfager » Mon Mar 09, 2020 11:19 am

Will we be given the intermediate reactions? Or should we be able to tell from the original reaction? Also how do we tell which intermediate reaction is the slow one?

We could have either situation in an exam. The slow step will always be given to you

Also, if you are given a rate law, it is important to know that the slow step is the rate-determining step. This can help you determine which intermediate reaction is the slow one when given the rate law.

How would we determine what the intermediate reaction is if we are not given it?

I don't think there is a way for you to see which is the slow equation. I think they have to give it to you.

I think it has to be given

I believe that the elementary steps and indications of which is the fast and slow step will be given and if the slow step isn't given then I think it will be evident with looking at the observed reaction rate at the overall reaction and then writing out the ones for the elementary steps and the rate that matches the observed rate is the 'slow'/ rate determining step. You find this by the Pre-Equilibrium process

It will be given which step is the slow step as we can not determine which is the slow step purely based off the equations
