### Determining reaction rate for overall reaction

How do we know what the rate limiting reaction within a proposed reaction mechanism is? I know that it has the slowest rate, but is this something we generally calculate ourselves (if so, how?) or not?

Usually the proposed reaction mechanism has steps that are labeled with either slow or fast which can be used to determine which step is the rate determining step and therefore calculate the rate of the reaction.
