Write the overall reaction for the mechanism proposed below and identify any reaction intermediates.
Step1 AC + B -> AB + C Step2 AC + AB -> A2B + C

How do we approach these questions?

to find the overall reaction you would add the reactions and cancel any terms that appear on both sides.

2AC + B ---> A2 + 2C


The intermediate would be AB because it is formed in the first step and consumed in the second step. This is intermediate because it doesn't actually appear as part of the overall balanced reaction just in the mechanism of the reaction.

For these types of questions, you would just place the reactants for both sides on the left of the arrow (in essence you are adding all of the reactants), and do the same for the products (but just to the right-- the products). If a molecule appears on both sides of the overall equation that you just wrote, and you can cancel it out of the overall equation, it's an intermediate.
