What is the difference between an elementary rate law and an overall rate law?

I believe that an elementary rate law corresponds to the rate law for one step of an equation for a multi-step reaction. The overall rate law refers to all the steps of a reaction, and that is determined by the slowest step.

An overall rate law is made up of elementary rate laws (which I believe represents what actually happens in a reaction at a molecular level).

The mechanism is made up of multiple elementary steps. Rate laws can be written for each of the elementary steps, and the overall rate law is determined by the slowest step.

What was most helpful in understanding the mechanism functionality of an overall rate law?
