Hi, I'm just really confused about what reaction mechanisms are and why they are relevant?

A reaction mechanism is the combination of all the elementary reactions that overall chemical change goes through.

With the reaction mechanisms method we can make educated guesses on reaction rates for untried reactions with the same or similar steps.

A reaction mechanism is important because it shows how we derive the experimentally observed rate laws. Proposed reaction mechanisms show a series of elementary steps, which may be slow/fast, which help explain why we observe the experimentally observed and determined rate laws.
