How does the order of a particular reactant differ from the order of an entire elementary step rate law?

The Individual orders of the reactants are added up to produce the overall order of the reaction.

How exactly does a reactant have an order as compared to an overall reaction order?

For an elementary step, the coefficients double as the order of the reactants.
The order for a non-elementary reaction cannot be determined from the formula, only experimentally.
