What is the difference between activation of energy and free energy of activation?

Activation Energy: It's like the "push" needed to start a reaction. Just think of it as the energy required to kick off a reaction.

Free Energy of Activation: This is the energy hurdle that the reaction must overcome. It's the energy required to reach the transition state from the reactants.

Hi! Activation energy is the energy barrier that must be overcame in order for a chemical reaction to occur. This represents the minimum energy required for reactant molecules to transform into product molecules which involves kinetic parameters. A high activation energy indicates a slower rxn rate since there is a greater amount of energy needed. Free energy of activation is the energy needed to initiate a reaction. Unlike activation energy, it involves both kinetic and thermodynamic parameters, not just kinetic. Typically, energy of activation gives information about favorability of the rxn, like spontaneous or not spontaneous while activation energy doesn't.
