### Effect of catalyst on fast versus slow step

Lets say there are 3 transition states in a reaction, if a catalyst is added to the slowest step, what is its effect on the overall rate reaction versus when a catalyst is added to the fastest step.

I would assume that since the slowest step determines the overall rate of the reaction it would speed up the overall rate compared to if the catalyst were to act on the fastest step. If the catalyst were to act on the fastest step, the activation energy barrier for that step would be lower but the overall rate of the reaction would be the same.
